Larry, Hey I am an old wrestling alum. If you can consider getting your ass kicked by Moses and Doug Bauer in practice every day, and laying on your stomach for three consecutive tournaments (but I never got pinned). I was really involved in wrestling because I looked cute in the tights.

comment by Ave Hoyos-Capozello '81

Joey- that's what I've always loved about you. Your humility and modesty... Ave P.S. You did fill out that wrestling uniform quite nicely - and you've still "got it" babe! :)

CM MESSAGE BOARDS - I don't know if anyone else has had this experience on Classmates.com - but every time I've tried to post messages on the MKHS message board there's always someone from the 50's or 60's that hijacks the conversation! (Funny thing is I received complaints from those same alumni complaining about the number of messages I posted to promote the reunion - they said I was taking up too much space!) Hmmm...pot calling kettle black! Anyway, we have a Message Board page on this site that currently isn't being used much. If anyone would like me to change or add topics for you to exchange messages along the lines of the Classmates.com site, please let me know. This is a good page but you can't create a string of conversations and it's not that easy to follow. Let me know - Ave

Ay, pinche Dave! No strips for you! We were probably hangin' out at Manny's at the same time and didn't even know it. My associates in the SPPT and I would go there pretty much any night of the week - weekends were best because you were guaranteed a couple of idiots would get into a fight in the parking lot, which led us to coin the phrase, "Manny's El Loco - Good Food and a Good Fight for under two bucks." I typed it on a piece of paper and the guys who worked there taped it to the inside of the order window. So cool to hear people talk about old businesses in M.P. I remember Monterey Park Lanes, Safeway, Gerards, George's Burgers, Young's Restaurant ("Awful Good Food"), Paris, Garvey Hardware, Shopping Bag/Fazio's/Great Skate, Sound Stage Records (where we bought our 45s), M.P. Stationers, the mortuaries, Star Market, Ed Kretz, O'Neal's Bike Shop, Duffy's and Brack's Paint. How about the "original" Atlantic Square? How many stores can you name? I still have an old M.P. business directory from about 1963 - every so often it's fun to look through it and walk down memory lane. Anyone remember the house on Newmark across from the old City Hall that was always decorated to the nines at Christmas? Or the pedestrian underpasses on Garvey (instead of crosswalks)? OK, NOW I'm dating myself - ugh!

comment by Richard Hart"78

I remember Garvey Ranch Park, I remember one weekend as a boy scoutt, we went and did a clean up in the park, cleaning it up. It was lot's of fun.

comment by Dave '82

wow, you all remember so much. Thanks to all the loadies at Marlboro country the late 70's and early eighties were a blur to me. LOL i remember i couldn't be caught dead at Pic N Save, loved Pup N Taco, and that phrase " Believe in us, were Music +" changed my life.

comment by Richard Hart"78

Wow: So many memories and places keep coming to mind. Before Manny's El Loco, remember A@W there. There was also Carter, Cram Mortuaries on Garvey, in fact Art Cram went to Keppel. Those were the days:

comment by Brigitte

Duffy's Liquor Store! How many of us bought beer there while still underage?....lol......and Dave I LOVED Pup~n~Taco fries!!!

comment by Ave Hoyos-Capozello '81

Okay, my amusing story... Walked into Country Store Liquor in my junior year to buy alcohol. I had in my possession a bonafide DMV license with my picture on it that said I was born in 1956 - height said I was 5' 10"! (I won't divulge how I procured the I.D. but should mention my older sister was class of '74.) So, I'm heading to the beer section to buy supplies for Talondi's try-outs that night when I notice my reflection in the beer case as the door is closing - after I made my selection. I TOTALLY forgot I had my Talondi shirt on - and on the back was my graduation year in BIG BLAZING NUMBERS "81". Thinking it was too late to turn back, I proceeded to the counter where Ted was waiting (I think that was the owner's son's name) and continued the transaction by requesting the bottle of Peach Schnapp's for Gloria Guerra '80 - her favorite. It took a long time before I walked in that store again. Next idiotic "gotcha" was going to Marie Callendar's bar before my surprise 21st birthday party. Dave (bartender extraordinaire) asked what the special occasion was - having noticed the blindfold I walked in with and our "dress up" attire. My friend, Cindy Quaternik, told Dave it was my 21st birthday. Problem was we'd been visiting his bar for more than two years... is there a theme here? Okay, done with confessions of idiocy for the day :)

comment by William (Bill) Campos '81

Ave!! I think you will have to go with page 2 for the Guest Book. It's getting pretty full here!!! lol...

comment by William (Bill) Campos '81

Man!, so many places you guys are talking about. They bring back lots of memories. I also remember Broasted Chicken just up the street from George's Burgers, that was a good place. There was also hot cocoa nights at Pronto Donuts after skating at Great Skate. Hey speaking of donuts, no one's mentioned the Helmes Bakery truck, eh!!! (waas up...)

comment by Nanette '75

Funny you should mention the Helm's truck. I was just talking about it the other day. What a treat when the man would open up the donut drawer! Yumm.. Ave, glad to know you were carrying on the Talondi tradition. You are a Talondi sister! First time I ever indulged was at a Talondi function. Unfortunately for the homeowner I got sick and used the sink! EW! My BF had to come over and help unclog it. What a guy. (Thanks Randy!)Ok I learned a lot that night. Was that Ted's liquor store on Garvey? Your story is too funny!

comment by Ave Hoyos-Capozello '81

Country Store Liquor (Garfield and Graves) by the steep hill that leads to Garfield - it still exists! (Angie Espinosa-Avila '81 and I bought beer there just a few weeks ago when we were at the Barnes Park Concert. Felt like old times. Ted's Liquor (on Garvey Avenue) - I remember it well. I grew up going to that store so I stayed away when I was in high school. (He knew my parents too well!) Ted's son opened the VW repair shop right next door. I think the building is still there. Enough of the liquor... I loved the Helm's truck - glazed donuts in the lower right-hand drawer. What about the little italian deli/store next to Benny's drive-thru restaurant and Brack's Paint Store on Garvey? Best italian sandwiches in town. I remember the woman behind the counter with the glasses so thick they made her eyes looked really tiny. She scared me when I was a little girl! Okay, I just ate dinner and I'm hungry again...

comment by Sherri '83

Dave: "Loadies" I haven't heard that in sooo long! Haha. Broasted chicken was a favorite hang out of mine! Cuties (you know who you are!)worked there and have I got stories! What were the dress shops in Atlantic Square near JC Penny? I can picture the gift box in my head, but not the name. I loved watching the loaves of bread being sliced up in the machine at Atlantic Bakery. I know...what a weirdo!

comment by David Miranda "82"

Can't wait till the reunion. It'll be great seeing all the old Keppelites. FYI, there's a Mark Keppel Elementary School in Paramount, Calif. For those of you who do or do not remember me, I'm the one who got pulled over with guns drawn by Monterey Park Police in a stolen Corvette with Ralph Hernandez right in front of school right after the "Powerplay Assembly" (remember those assemblies in the gym once a year). That embarassment will live with me FOREVER!!! God, I get chills just thinking about it. Now a Commissioner with the City of Montebello and a Program Manager with the City of Paramount for at-risk youth. Man, what a difference 25 years make. See ya all in September... P.S. Don't forget the TEQUILA!!!!!!

Dear Tony Lomelli, I am sorry that your eye sight and memory has failed you sooner then you would have liked. But be that as it may, that is Sammy Ybarra's head between Frank Guzman's legs and Alfred has the unlikely pleasure of supporting Tom on his chicken bone shoulder blades. But nevermind all that, how about my knockers I know you want to touch them! P.S. Tony you graduated in 80, remember?

comment by Bill Alford class of "76"

Looking forward to seeing those that can make the reunion. Hopefully our memory will still remember each other. To those that can't make it, you will be missed, but not forgotten. And to those that are no longer with us, may you look down upon us and smile and laugh at us, as we remember and honor you. It may not have been that long ago, but it has been a life time ago.

comment by TONY LOMELI

HEY EDDIE, THANKS FOR THE UPDATE KNOCKER BOY! JUST WAS TRYING TO TEST YOUR MIND/SIGHT ON WHO WAS ACTUALLY IN THE PICTURE. SO WHAT IS THIS I HEAR ABOUT YOU LIVING WITH A GUY? OH WELL WE WON'T DISCUSS THAT ANY FURTHER UNTIL THE REUNION(HA!) AND ANOTHER THING MUST BE YOUR MIND GOING YOU SPELLED MY LAST NAME WRONG IT'S "LOMELI" !

Ok you guys still trying to remember that dam recipe for the sauce on those strips LOL! I may have to investigate and track it down. But in the mean time, all this talk about food made me think about some of these secret recipes I have found through out the years. For those of you who love marinates, I have one you will fall in love with. This is a secret recipe that came from a restraunt (Steak & Ale) in Texas. This is one of my favorites. 4oz. soy sauce 5oz. sherry 14oz. pineapple chunks(unsweeten) 2oz. red wine viniger 3oz. sugar(1/4-1/2 cup) 2 tsp. msg(Accent) 1/2tsp. garlic powder Marinate 24-36 hours Use boneless beef or chicken Let me know what you think, this really is a good marinate. Your steak will cut like butter OH YEAH! I had many compliments on it, I'm sure you will enjoy it. I suggest using ribeye steak, it is to die for!

comment by Hector Rios '79

Ok I just realized I offered to send Ave some English Toffee and no one else, another one of my secret recipes, . HOW RUDE IS THAT LOL! I'm sorry, The next time you guys have a get together I promise I will bring some for everyone to try.

comment by Marie '82

Larry Landless, you big lug! Thanks for organizing the brunch sweetie! You had a camera, I had a camera and no one took pictures!! What a bunch of goofs! I have yet to hear one person say their getting tired of these outings. Only time can come between us, my friends. Jabbers and Bri & Joe...where were you?? Martha, thanks for always remembering us! You're the best girl!

comment by Natalie Anderson-Schoening '80

ouch--too many memories. Paris Rest, I remember walking by there on my way to Ynez and seeing all the chickens spinning on the roaster. Georges, corner of Chandler and Garvey have good burgers but I can't remember what is was before that. Manny's El Loco in Covina, this has been the ONLY place that comes even close the the BP strips. Taco Treat on Garfield near Emerson, deep fried bean & cheese burritos, oh-so-good and oh-so-bad for you. They are now on Las Tunas near Santa Anita. The fire engine at BP sand box is gone along with the lion head drinking fountain. Every year I still go to Play Days and the July 4th celebration. Next year we should plan to go.

Hi everyone. I just wanted to respond to Ave and Eddie's discussion on this Guest Book concerning the night before Thanksgiving at Norhs Woods Inn. I don't want to be a party pooper but I talked to everyone involved except Eddie and it was a unamimous decision to maintain a boys only policy for this event. The actual name of the event is"Boys Night Out" and it has been so except one time many moons ago when "one" lady attended. I am not sure where Eddie got his information from. Anyway, nads will be checked at the door like every year and I am not sure if Eddie will get in this year.

No problem Joey. Some things should stay the same. We'll find another time to mix it up. Have a great time!

Hey Everyone,I need your prayers to keep my spirit alive at all times. Also, strengthen my faith.  Recently, my boyfriend got involved in a car accident before he dropped me off from the Venice Room. Right now, I am facing this terrible emotional guilt-trip because I felt I should've have done something more to avoid the accident. Anyways, I am glad I am not in the car when he drove me home. But yet, just still shooken up of it. Regardless, the time passes to forget the unforgettable experiences, I am really numbed by it. ..Thank you God for the blessing of having the nice people here in MKHS  Alumnis. Gracie-1984P.S.
