How in the hell can I get 12% of the Reunion Poll?AVE!!!

comment by Ave Hoyos-Capozello '81

For those of you that may not know who Brian DeJesus (aka "bdj") is... he's an '80 alumni that busted his bum helping out with the 2006 Multi-Year bash through the many months of planning.  In fact, he did such a great job that I think he should do this one and I'll sit back, by my ticket, and have a great time!  Did I mention he also offered to host the party at his place?  What do you say, folks?

Hi everyone!! Can't wait to see old friends and make new ones in a few weeks. Im the lucky one who gets to work with Charlie Tuna every morning on 104.3 KBIG. Anyway - just wanted to give you a heads up that the annual TUNATHON is this week (8/17 Thurs & 8/18 Fri). We are on the air all day - both days - raising money for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. Its an incredible and emotional event and I'm guaranteed to cry - especially since im pregnant!! Would love for you to tune in and if you feel moved enough to donate - we'd really appreciate it. So would the kids at CHLA. Thanks again - see you next month!! xo, Irma

I'm happy to see all the classmates who have registered on this reunion website, but where is everyone from the Class of 79? It would be nice to see more of them. Thanks to this website I have had some friends e-mail me and it was nice catching up. I hope to see more of them at the reunion in September.

comment by William R. Campos

Hey everone, I'm impressed to see the latest photos on this website. It's good to see some familiar faces again and there are some I have to remember. Ave looks like the website could use some more NOW pictures huh... lol. Anyway, we've all changed in many ways since highschool and I'm glad to read to weekly outcomes of the meetings, it looks like things are progressing. I've been back from the front lines for a few weeks now and I'm looking forward to see everyone at the reunion. "Saludos a todos!"

Hey .......Tony Lomeli!! Where have you been?

comment by Bill Alford

Hi all

comment by RENEE '74

My MKHS attire included stuff from Jeans West, London Britches and last but not least Doughboys 'cuz that was where you could find the lowest hiphugger jeans with the widest bell bottoms you ever saw. Typical attire consisted of halter top, these jeans and wallabees or desert boots! Ave, do you remember Chemin de Fers?

comment by Becky '79

This is really going to be a blast. Like the other person who responded about not graduating from our High School, I graduated earlier then my actual class and I missed alot of what would have been my senior year however, alot of the familiar faces on this site bring back memories of Keppel, Garvey and even Monterey Vista! So I'm looking forward to seeing some friends from the past. Just last week a few friends and I had lunch together and it was so nice to talk about old times. Not to mention how we have all begun e-mailing and staying in touch. So yes, I think this who reunion has really helped so many reconnect. Thanks to all of you who made it happen. Especially you Ave! See you in 9 days! Becky~

comment by Diana M. Parra '82

Thanks again Ave and everyone for such a memorable night!!!! It was well worth all the hard work you all put into it!!!! Let's do this again!! We should make it a point for everyone to always show up for MKHS Homecoming games every year to keep in touch and show continue support for our beloved high school. This reunion can be a start of something new!!!! To Joey Caruso~~~~your video....LOL!!!! I can't stop watching it!!! It is sooooo funny!!!!! I never knew you were so talented!!!! Very Funny !!!!!! Hey David, Does Gary still live at the same place? I hope it really does happen. Letty, are you in? Martha, are you in? Anyone?

comment by carol belyeu

I still have to go to Tepeyac whenever I am in L.A. and bring home a couple of hollenbeck burritos!! I never had the Barnes Park "strips" either. I did get my heartbroken at Play Days though, Boo Hoo!! You guys are bringing back so many childhood memories for me, Places I've not thought about in years and years, espcially the ice house, chris and pitts, and T.G.& Y. I loved that little store.

comment by carol belyeu

My fondest skating memories were at Fiesta roller rink, way before the Great Skate. I remember cashing in bottles that I collected from the neighborhood to get enough money to skate all weekend. I had the bomb skates with the stretchy covers :)

comment by doug melenez 82

David Lopez, you didnt know about Barnes park strips cuz remember we lived on the Garvey Park side, that was our hood. The snack bar at Garvey park also had their strips, it came with a runny guacamole salsa, but they were good. So many memories at Garvey Park, mostly playing Little League with coach Rodriguez (David Rodriguez's dad) in the Orioles, best coach ever. Always looked forward to opening day, when we took our team photos. Also remember the swimming pool, it cost .25 cents to get in. I also remember the home runs David Rodriguez used to hit over the right field fence and hit the snack bar roof, all the kids would rush to get the ball and turn it into the snack bar for a free soda.

Sherri: Kiss And Say Goodbye was sung by the Manhattens. Now you Know!!!

comment by Becky 79

I do remember the old city hall in the 5th grade I remember my girl scout troop was in the parade. That was something! The entire area has changed so much. But we all seem to have some fond memories. Does Barnes park still have that old fire engine in the play ground? As for the strips everyone keeps talking about, did anyone get the recipe? Really though , I don't think they can ever be duplicated. As for Chris & Pitts, if anyone has the cravings they still have one operating out here in Whittier on Washington Blvd, right past Norwalk.

comment by carol belyeu

I used to love to hang out at Garvey park and yes, I too spent more time there than Barnes. I lived right up the block on Jackson ave. I had a few make out sessions at that park! Brian Jury comes to mind, does anyone know whatever happened to him?

WOW! 10 more days until the HUGE PARTY! errrr... reunion! I would like to thank everyone that has worked so hard behind the scenes to help Ave bring us this Multi-Year Reunion. Especially those of you that have donated your own personal time to help reconnect all of us with our fellow alumni’s. I know we ALL have very busy lives, but you took the time & effort to call or send emails to our old friends and family and got the word out regarding the reunion. Hell... Irma Blanco even mentioned the reunion on K-Big103 a couple of times! I’ve been reconnected with old friends that I have almost forgotten. I’m even speaking to my sister more than ever. For those that can not make it to the reunion or beach party, don’t let your “busy” lives get in the way of catching up with old friends. I hope you will take advantage of this web-site and reconnect with your old classmates (and for some, family members).

comment by Suzi Bohne '83-kinda

In response to the girl who didn't go to MKHS her last 2 years...neither did I! My parents rippped me out of Keppel during 10th grade and moved me to BF Egypt, aka Rancho Cucamonga - before it was a cool place to live and shop. The high school out there was totally stuck up and I hated it...I don't even claim to have attended Alta Loma High School. I can't remember ONE person's name from there. The only good thing about living out there, around 1981, was that there was NOTHING out there, and I used to ride my dirt bike on all the roads, and once I even had a herd of sheep cross in front of me. But from Keppel, they're all my Garvey and Dan T Williams friends I grew up with. Heck, even going to the 7-11 on New Ave and Garvey, you'll see people you know. We all can't wait!!!! Let the lip waxing, hair dying and callous shaving begin!!!

Thanks Miranda for the info on Denise and tell her hello for me on your next shopping adventure to Costco! I hope she remembers me, ask, if she remembers the night we went out to some wedding at some hall next to Barnes Pk! oh! just give her my #, Kim

comment by Steve Lustro '73

OK, now that the posts have started to slow down after 2-1/2 weeks I will say my piece. I second every positive comment that has been posted here since September 23. All the adjectives found in the guestbook don't begin to do justice to what a wonderful event this was. To those who couldn't make the reunion, you have my sincerest condolences - you missed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (until Ave regains her sanity and does this again). I especially enjoyed spending time and imbibing with old (yes, I can say that) friends Mike Gatto, Faron Gorham, Chris Ward, Bobby and Marianne Panza, Lis and Mari Ramos, and Celia Alvarez. Got to chat at least briefly with fellow '73ers Matt Marquisee, Dennis DiPietro and Chris Barthel, and also had the privilege of talking with a few people for the first time in over 30 years (Kitty Jones, Patty Luna, Sandi Scott, Julie Ceballos, Judy Barela and two of the McCoy sisters). Captain Rick Garcia, Richard Gorman, Laurie Chong and Stacey Eddow - it was great to see all of you again. Ave, thank you (I think) for allowing me to be one of the reunion speakers. It doesn't matter that everyone wasn't listening to the "old guy" with gray hair, because I'm not sure how I did anyway! (Julie Ceballos recommended not drinking before speaking, but my fellow "goomba" Chris Ward made sure that suggestion went out the window.) For me, however, the unexpected bonus of this reunion was being able to meet people who I would have otherwise never had an opportunity to meet, even if it has been just to say hi. To Ave, Dave Lopez, David Miranda, John Caruso, Natalie Anderson, BDJ, Alex Delgado, Gina Chavez, Darryl Griffen, Cathy Luna, David Vargas, Mike Lucero, Brigitte Trenzini and Irma Blanco - it has been a pleasure to make your acquaintance. If I forgot anyone, I apologize, but I'm getting a little wordy here...must be from my days as editor of The Aztec. Let's do this again soon...but we need a bigger room! Ciao -

comment by Steve Lustro '73

Uh-oh, another case of CRS (if you don't know what that is, you're not old enough yet). Louise Velarde - thank you for the very nice compliment you paid to all of us old guys you and your brother were forced to sit with on Saturday night. What a sweetie - I hope I remembered to say thank you. (No, Dave Lopez, she didn't say, "You guys look good for old farts!") LOL!!!!!

comment by david niranda

Ok marie, I'm working with Larry Molina to get this thing going, but I think logistics-wise it should be a Gary Porras house. I'll talk to him. See ya...

comment by Yvonne Fournier Hoffmann '76

Seeing Steve's nice comments reminded me that I didn't get an opportunity to talk to Marianne Panza that evening and I just wanted to say hello! I was there w/ my sis who is pregnant (yes, at 45!)Unfortunately, by the time Laurie Chong mentioned where you were sitting, you and Tami were both gone. Again, I want to echo everybody's comments and say how wonderful the evening was reconnecting with some great people!

comment by William (Bill) Campos '81

Hey I remember Manny's El Loco on the corner of Atlantic and Garvey, they had great burgers and burritos. I also remember Chano's on Garfield, too bad it's no longer there. The last time I visted I noticed it was gone! The taco salads were my wife's favorite. Now, there's still The Origanal Pantry, downtown LA for it's hardy breakfasts and Ciros Flautas and El Tepeyac on Evergreen in East LA... I hope they're still there.

comment by Brigitte

Yes I remember Fazio's.....I even remember that it was Shopping Bag before that!

comment by Becky 79

Play Days! Who could forget! Those were so much fun. Martha, Do you remember the last time we went? Now that was memorable... And I believe if I'm not wrong they still go on. Although it's been years since I went, those days make me smile. Richard, the Boys club wasn't that next to the Library? I can remember so many great memories at Barnes Park, some great summers spent there for sure. This just goes to show how special our community was and still is. For those Monterey Vista alumni, where is everyone?

comment by Sherri

What great memories! Play Days was the great "first date" before you could date place. The Great Skate-great time! What ever happened to Eddie Rinaldi??? Why was "Kiss and Say Goodbye" one of the frequent "couples only" songs? Chris & Pitts was my favorite birthday restaurant. Who remembers House of Louie, Belle n Beau, Augostino's and World of Records? Everyone but me worked at Sizzler. What about Paris Restaurant, Gerard's and Googies? I wish I could take my kids around town and show them the awesome community I grew up in. The buildings have changed, but I can introduce them to the amazing people, like yourselves, that made up that community. Thanks for making my childhood so great!

comment by Richard Hart"78

Yes: Becky the Boy's Club was next to the Library. Remember the old City Hall, before they built the new one. I always make it a point, everytime I get out their to california, to drive through Monterey Park and pass bye Mark Keppel, it always brings back great memories.

comment by Dianne Quintela '85

Hey Dez, "Happy Birthday!"........."Cheers!"

comment by Natalie Anderson-Schoening '80

Play Days are this weekend! 5/10 to 5/13, parade still on Saturday. I can't make it this year but on Thursday 5/10 they are having an American Idol style competition. There is one Keppel alumni entered. They may not serve the strips anymore but hey, we all have the receipe now anyway!

comment by maria abuede/ojeda

If anyone of your runs into a graduate from '87, please encourage them to sign up, I am looking for a lot of people. Maybe you know them if you attended MKHS between 1984 and 1987

comment by Tony R. Valdez - '80

I just wanted to congratulate all of the MKHS family graduates and wish you the best in your future endeavors. I also want to wish all my fellow MKHS classmates/alumni a fun and safe summer with your family and friends. Don't forget the invites to your summer BBQ's(wink). If anyone enjoys fishing the local freshwater lakes or the beaches/harbors, send me a e-mail so we can get together.

comment by Yvonne Fournier Hoffmann '76

Thanks Ave for inserting the note from a friend. The thoughts expressed by "J" remind us how we shouldn't take things for granted and how a part of each of us changed that day. It is important to remain a country we can be proud of and mindful of how we conduct ourselves when traveling out of the country.
